At least 149 people, all of whom participated in the rally that opened the election campaign of the Democratic Party in the Nation’s Martyrs boulevard, including the party leader, Lulzim Basha, were admitted yesterday at the Hospital of Tirana and other hospitals of the country for medical care following the similar symptoms that they had manifested.

In Tirana, all 140 patients which were admitted to hospital during the night and yesterday afternoon, have been treated for burning in the eyes, tears, itching and redness of the face. All the patients admitted to the Hospital of Tirana have claimed that they have been among the first rows, near podium where the leader of DP, Lulzim Basha delivered his speech.

After communicating to regional hospitals and health centers in the country, it resulted that 4 cases of conjunctivitis were admitted to the hospital of Elbasan and 5 cases with the same diagnosis were admitted to the regional hospital of Durres.

In Tirana, 7 patients are under medical care at the Ophthalmic Ward, while the others have left the hospital after receiving medical treatement. “The Ophthalmic Ward reports that as of the morning, the number of patients has been increasing. There are 140 people who have come to receive first aid and among them 14 have been admitted. Currently, 7 patients are receiving treatment at the Hospital of Tirana. Their situation is becoming stable, but the fact the agent that caused it is not known, has forced authorities to monitor them closer for possible complications. The patients that have arrived later have manifested the same clinical signs, that of an intoxication such as redness in the eyes, eye pain, dizziness, vomiting, redness in the area of the face and the neck, shortness of breath”, the official statement of the Ministry of Health says.

Meanwhile, according to the sources of the Ophthalmic Ward at the University Hospital of Tirana say that a part of the patients have suffered a temporary loss of sight and redness on the face or the neck.

All law enforcement institutions have started to investigate this serious event, which is suspected to be poisoning.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner ordered the cordoning of the public space used last night for the rally, while the investigation continues.

However, another suspicion relates to the fact that the lighting used during the opening rally of the DP could have been made through UV lighting, as the symptoms that were seen are similar to those caused by UV A and B rays, starting with burns, skin redness, conjunctivitis damages or eye burn, which are accompanied by burning of redness of the eye, the feeling that something is penetrating the eye, fear from light, etc.

The patients that have arrived later have manifested the same clinical signs, that of an intoxication such as redness in the eyes, eye pain, dizziness, vomiting, redness in the area of the face and the neck, shortness of breath. /e.i/
