INTERVIEW/Suzana Guxholli: The crises always damage the economy
Interview with the head of the Department for Energy and Natural Sources at the Democratic Party, former advisor for economy of the Prime Minister

Interviewed for Albanian Free Press by Eglantina Nasi

Mrs. Guxholli, do you think the recent political crisis had an impact on the economy of the country and business sector in particular? Where do you see its effects?

Any type of crisis is never good for the economy of a country. The political crisis of the recent months preceded by the previous economic, social and financial crisis, had a negative impact on the economy and the performance of the Albanian business, thus bringing to the surface the weaknesses of the system. The business sector, which is tired of tax increases, instability of the tax policies, tired of an aggravated business climate, without boosting elements and security, in the absence of financing and crediting, shrinks, hesitates and is put on hold. This situation prevents new investments and the expansion of existing ones. The crisis brings to the surface and adds elements of risks in the Albanian economy for investors, banks and it also lowers the confidence of individual consumers. As a result, employment is growing, job opportunities are low and often not real and qualified people are leaving the country. The pessimistic facts and figures of the Albanian economy are testimony to this scenario.

A few days ago, the business sector came out with a public message and demanded stability from the political class. How would you consider this appeal?

Of course the business sector is demanding stability from the government and politics. The current political agreement is expected to restore business confidence and will once again focus the attention on the projects which have been put aside or cancelled.

The establishment of clear rules of the game, the establishment of promoting policies for doing business, are legitimate demands and necessary for the business.

Free and fair elections certainly have an impact in the growth of confidence and security for the business sector, but they are not enough.

Given that we’re in an electoral campaign, what is the spot that economic occupies in this campaign and what are some of the main economic platforms that voters will hear?

The economic platforms that will be presented by the political parties will not only increase optimism for the business sector, but it will also push it to seriously think of new investments or expand existing activities.

Today, the business sector is waiting to receive political offers, clear economic programs which support and reflect the requests and needs expressed by the business sector.

The business sector needs a reduced tax burden with lower taxes than the countries of the region in order to attract foreign investments from neighboring countries and beyond.
