Dust on the streets and the small particles that are emitted by cars are responsible for the death of around 2100 people each year in our country. This alarming figure has been made public by specialists of environment and public health, who say that air pollution in our country is very high.

Air pollution

Specialists of Public Health stress that air pollution is responsible for the death of 2100 people, but also responsible for other respiratory diseases, lung cancer and heart problems. “It is a fact that Albania has a big problem with urban air. According to the latest report of the European Environment Agency, in 2016, Albania had 2120 deaths a year from air pollution. According to expert Agron Deliu, the report issued by the European Environment Agency on air pollution during 2016 indicates that last year there were 2120 deaths due to the high concentration of damaging particles. The 2016 report on the quality of air in Europe issued by the European Environment Agency, has published alarming figures about our country as far as early deaths due to air pollution are concerned. According to the report, 2120 died in 2016. 2010 of them died as a result of the high concentration of small particles in the air, 10 of them died due to the concentration of nitrogen dioxide and 100 died as a result of the great concentration of ozone. Compared to 2013 when there were 773 deaths, this figure has almost tripled now.

Measures

But what needs to be done in order to change the situation? Specialists demand measures to reduce air pollution, starting with better methods of cleaning the streets inside cities and more control the quality of fuels. “It’s a wide range of measures that needs to be taken. Roads should be better cleaned, fuels should be better controlled and green areas should be expanded, because green areas are able to filter small particles gases emitted in urban areas, Deliu says. On the other hand, heads of the Ministry of Interior call on people to reduce the use of cars. “I call on people to reduce the use of their cars and possibly use public transport. We will implement the introduction of new methods of sustainable transport, such as electric vehicles”, says Kledi Xhaxhiu, representative of the ministry of Environment.
