World Bank: Albania is the country with the lowest salaries in the region
Albania is the country with the lowest salaries in the region, but at the same time, it is also the country with the lowest state fund spent for public servants’ salaries. Such fact is confirmed by a recent report of the World Bank on Western Balkans, in which Albania seems inferior as opposed to neighboring countries as far as salaries are concerned. So, according to this report, Albania spends 5% of its Gross Domestic Product for salaries, at a time when all other countries of the region spend around 10% of their Gross Domestic Product on salaries. “Western Balkan countries will need six decades to catch up the amounts of salaries paid in the European Union, if they continue to develop with the average growth that they registered from 1995 until 2015”, experts of the World Bank also argue.

Let us recall that the average official salary in Albania is around 347 euros, slightly behind Kosovo, where the average monthly salary is 405 euros. If we continue with the figures concerning salaries in Europe, published by Wikipedia, Switzerland and Iceland have the highest salaries with 4400 euros a month. Meanwhile, in countries such as Germany and France, a citizen has an average monthly salary of around 2200 thousand euros. The report in question also states the fact that unemployment rate in Western Balkans region, including Albania, is almost two times higher than in other small countries in transition, which are now part of the European Union. “When half of the labor force is looking for a job and a fourth of them who are looking for a job, are unable to find it, the need to increase participation in the labor markets in the region remains decisive. This can be achieved by promoting work and by lifting barriers which exist in employment, barriers that older workers, youngsters, women and minorities face”, the World Bank states among others.
